Arkansas Extension Homemakers Council is encouraging all counties to have entries in the Sew with Cotton Contest next year. Competition sponsors include Arkansas Farm Bureau and the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service in cooperation with Family & Consumer Science Teachers.

Contest winners are announced in early December each year in  connection with the Annual Meeting of Arkansas Farm Bureau and next year it will be in Hot Springs.  The contest has two divisions, Youth and Adult, and a special category where a person can sew something for another family membr or individual.  The categories for the youth are Cotton Dress, Cotton Sports/School Wear, and  Cotton Party Dress.  The categories for the Adult Division are Cotton Dress, Cotton Sportswear, and Cotton Suit.  The prize money is fantastic.  Each First Place Winner in each of the categories gets $400, Second Place $250, Third Place $150, Fourth Place $100 and Fifth Place $50.  Winners in the Special Category will not be eligible for sweepstakes prizes.  Sweepstakes winners in both Adult and Youth Divisions also receive a serger sewing machine that is valued at $500.  Applications should be sent to Farm Bureau by the end of October, 2012.  A booklet describing the contest and how to enter will be in each Family and Consumer Science Agent’s packet at the AEHC State Meeting in June 2012.  We hope to have many EHC members enter this wonderful contest.

On December 1, 2011 at their Annual Meeting in Little Rock, Arkansas Farm Bureau recognized its Sew with Cotton Contest winners for 2011.  There were 29 contestants in the competition.  Gene Martin of Farm Bureau made the presentations.

Brenda Sandage of Batesville (IndependenceCounty) earned the Adult Sweepstakes win ( shown right) and Nicole Fostor of Viola (FultonCounty), 14, took the Youth Sweepstakes (shown below). Sandage had earlier won the Adult Dress category and Foster the Youth Dress category.  Nicole is a freshman at Viola High School and is the daughter of  Chad and Jamie Foster.

Both winners won $400 and also took home a Husqvarna serger sewing machine.
