November 18, 2011

Holiday Foods was conducted by the Union County Extension Homemaker Clubs and the Universityof Arkansas, Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service in UnionCounty on Tuesday, November 8th at the First Assembly of God Church in El Dorado.  The theme was Simply Simple but Fabulous.  The Extension Homemakers showcased easy to make recipes for the holidays using around five ingredients.  One of the master gardeners designed the stage using cardboard, a thrifty way to use leftovers that are normally thrown away.

In conjunction with holiday foods, the EHC Celebrating 100 years display was used but modified by using pictures of our county members during the last century.  A handout was developed from one of the posters highlighting EHC member’s century accomplishments.  On the other side of the handout, the county EHC clubs were listed with their president, meeting dates and times promoting EHC club participation.

The FCS Agent prepared a handout on music and health for the educational feature.  As part of the special celebration, Rejoice, a ladies ensemble fromImmanuelBaptistChurchsang a selection of songs for the holidays.

From the evaluation, the impact of last year’s program on Celiac’s Disease and Diabetes was 10% lost 10 pounds or more, 10% now use alternative sweeteners, 15% read labels for gluten-free products and 15% eat smaller servings.  From this year’s program, one lady called the next day wanting to know how to join one of our clubs.   Approximately 260 participated in the event.
